Well that was a nice little three-day weekend. Happy President’s Day. Love Presidents; they’re awesome.
You know what else is awesome? The Skinny. Let’s do this.
In the latest CNN/ORC poll, 57% of Americans disapprove of how Obama is handling ISIS. Overall, 58% of Americans believe the fight against ISIS is going badly.
The suspect in the two Copenhagen shootings on Saturday allegedly posted an allegiance to ISIS on his Facebook page moments before opening fire at a free speech rally and later at a synagogue. The suspect killed two and wounded a handful before being killed by police in a gun fight at his apartment.
Snow In New Places
Finally! After several weeks of the most intense snowfall Boston has ever seen, other places in the U.S. are getting hit with snow. The Midwest and South are being hit with 6-12 inches of snow from a large storm passing across the middle part of the country. Kentucky to New Jersey are preparing for snow while Tennessee through North Carolina are preparing for ice.
In New England we’re bracing for main course of bitter cold with a side of light snow. This should serve nicely to ice up our 8 feet of standing snow.
A train carrying 100 train cars full of crude oil exploded in West Virginia yesterday. It was a scene. The local town’s water supply was contaminated, so those residents are scrambling after a state of emergency was declared in the area.
Remember Obama’s aggressive immigration reform proposals from late last year? The one’s where he’s preparing to take executive action to implement? Well a federal judge has granted a request by 26 states to temporarily block those actions, allowing a lawsuit to now make its way through the courts.
Still missing. Coming up on a year.
Economy (last week)
Dow: 18,019 +194 (+1.1%) S&P 500: 2,097, +41 (+2.0%)
Stocks were up last week. This is good. The reasons they were up? Well, Hasbro’s toys, Urban Outfitters, Aeropostale and Cisco were all trading up after reporting solid sales and profits.
As it tradition, it wasn’t all pretty. Tesla reported a quarterly loss of $108 million; low gas prices pushed consumers away from the electric cars. AIG and Zynga also suffered tough Q4s.
Today we’re looking out for quarterlies from Fossil (lol, used to rock those watches) and Potbelly Sandwiches.
NHL – Alex Biega! Former Harvard Hockey captain, former Sammy Riggs roommate/teammate, 4+ year American League grinder and all-around great guy Alex Biega SHINED in his NHL debut for the Vancouver Canucks last night; he scored the game-winner and was named the game’s first star as the Canucks edged the Wild 3-2.

Golf – Golf insider Tim Rosaforte reported yesterday that the U.S. is preparing to name Davis Love III as the 2016 U.S. Ryder Cup captain. DLIII is a player’s favorite; he was the captain of the 2012 U.S. Ryder Cup team that blew a 10-6 lead on Sunday at Medinah near Chicago.
NBA – Kobe made some comments about a career “rebirth” and ESPN loves it. Whatever.
‘Fifty Shades’ set a Presidents Day weekend record bringing $94.4 million.
Mars! You really gotta hate your job to want to take your talents to a small, red baron rock.
Super Important Fact
If you drove from Earth to Mars at 60 mph, it would take you 271 years and 222 days. Then, if you didn’t have a space suit, Mars’ super low pressure would turn your blood into bubbles, killing you instantly.
New week, new opportunity to dominate. We’re in the heart of winter but, if you really think about it, we’re only 5-6 weeks away from the occasional spring day. Exciting stuff. See it. Believe it. Have a day.
