The Skinny: Wednesday, February 18th, 2015

Hump day. Yep. Camels. Annoying voices. Geico. You get it.

It’s The Skinny. Get this. Here we go.

The deranged militants launched a large assault near the northern Iraqi city of Irbil, the Kurdish (good guys) capital. ISIS was eventually repelled, but significant casualties were suffered on both sides. Coalition air support was unable to help due to the closeness of battle between the two sides.

The U.N. has also reported that ISIS is harvesting organs. Bodies in mass graves have been found to have incisions and to be missing kidneys and other organs.

Chris Kyle

‘American Sniper’ Chris Kyle’s killer is on trial for murder. The prosecution rested yesterday in their effort to put Eddie Ray Routh behind bars for life. Routh killed Kyle and veteran Chad Littlefield at a shooting range in 2013.

Ceasefire my ass. Several people on both the Ukrainian and Russian side of the conflict have been killed since a noon Sunday “truce” went into effect. Europe and the U.S. have placed numerous sanctions on Russia for blatantly backing separatists wreaking havoc in eastern Ukraine. Russia ridiculously denies the degree of their involvement.

Obama Immigration

A Texas judge struck down Obama’s executive action on immigration reform earlier this week. Republicans are pumped. The White House is not. The judge is, obviously, a very conservative judge not particularly keen on Obama’s policies. The White House said they will appeal the decision, but they must do so via one of the nation’s most conservative circuit courts. It’s likely the case will make its way to the Supreme Court and be ruled on by June.

Kentucky Killings

A dead 16-year-old has become the center of a wildly tragic story. Jason Hendrix, a 16-year-old from Kentucky with no known relation to Jimmy, was killed in a gun fight with a Maryland state trooper after ignoring a traffic stop. A look into his background uncovered the bodies of his mom, dad and sister back in Kentucky. It is originally believed they died as a result of disputes over cell phone and computer usage.

Secret Service

After a rough couple years for the Secret Service, with prostitution and excessive drinking scandals and a White House breach, the Secret Service director resigned/was fired. Obama was then urged to appoint an outside. Today, he did just the opposite of that, appointing the former head of his personal detail, Joseph Clancy, as Secret Service director.

Missing Plane

Still missing.

Eh, so-so day yesterday. We’re up, which is good. We like up. MGM was hurt yesterday as China is cracking down on corruption (lol). Goodyear Tire and Apple had solid days, however, as Goodyear is enjoying a friendly $2 billion tax credit and Apple received large orders for its upcoming smart watch.

Today we’re looking out for quarterlies from Denny’s, Hyatt Hotels, and Hilton Hotels.

Golf – Europe announced Darren Clarke as their 2016 Ryder Cup captain. The U.S., while having not announced anything official yet, will give Davis Love III the nod at a presser next Tuesday. The comp will be held at Hazeltine in Minnesota, the site of YE Yang’s unlikely PGA Championship win over Tiger in 2009.

NBA – Carmelo Anthony is shutting it down for the year and having surgery soon. Good for him. The Knicks suck.

NFL – The AZ Cards and Larry Fitzgerald have inked a 2-year deal that will allow the veteran wide receiver to play out his career in Arizona.

A new report claims that a ball boy attempted to put into play a football unapproved by the refs in the AFC title game between the Colts and Pats. Whatever. This is getting ridiculous.

Jameis Winston is expected to go No. 1 in this year’s NFL draft, despite looking like he’s been on a two-month bender.

Afroman decked a girl that jumped on stage and started grinding with him. The video is, as it should be, everywhere right now. Including here.

All jokes aside, one of the funniest thing I’ve ever seen.

Super Important Fact

In 1948, Harry Truman was forced out of the White House because it was about to collapse. The FDR administration ignored the repair budget and, subsequently, the building overextended its stint without repairs and renovations. When expected in ’48, Truman was forced to move out. An upgrading project was then finished in 1952.
