There is not an athlete on the planet hotter than Rory McIlroy right now. He’s won the last 2 major championships. Last year, he signed a quarter billion dollar endorsement deal with Nike. This spring, he broke off his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki a day after their wedding invitations went out (I don’t know if that makes him hot, but it’s just a true thing that happened). This fall (or end of summer), he’s done ‘The Tonight Show’ and the ALS ice bucket challenge with Tiger. Oh, and he also called out the hottest chick on ‘Suits,’ dumped a bucket of water all over her, then took selfies in an elevator with her. So yeah, he’s on a hot streak.

Today, he showed off a bit of an understandably pompous attitude by chirping the game’s two biggest names, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. At East Lake Country Club in Atlanta a day ahead of the PGA Tour’s final event, Rory was asked about those two’s absence from the tournament (yeah, neither one made it to this tournament), to which he responded:
They’re just getting older. Phil’s 43 or whatever, and Tiger’s nearly 40. So they’re getting into the sort of last few holes of their careers, and that’s what happens.
That comment? Absolutely phenomenal. Phil’s 43 or whatever. Hilarious. It really doesn’t matter what career or what life situation you’re in, every 25-year-old looks at 40-somethings and thinks they’re “getting old.” If 40 is the new 30, then “in your 40s” is the new “elderly,” and Rory illustrated that feeling perfectly. Oh, Phil and Tiger not here? Yeah, they’re old, that’s what happens.
It’s the Rory era and it’s Rory’s world and we’re just extremely lucky to be living in it.
