As you should know, this year college football rolls out the first ever 4-team playoff to determine the national champ. Let’s look at the top teams to get an idea of where we’re at and where we might be at come December.

Florida State is the current #1 and the defending national champs. They host #6 Notre Dame in 2 weeks, but don’t have another ranked opponent on the schedule the rest of the way in.

Auburn leaped to #2 after trouncing LSU. However, of their 7 remaining games on the schedule, 5 of those are against top-15 ranked opponents. Toss a potential SEC Championship game in the mix and you’ll soon figure out that Auburn has a hell of a road ahead of them.

Mississippi State jumped to #3, but they still have #2 Auburn, #7 ‘Bama, and co-#3 Ole Miss on the table. Plus a potential SEC Championship game.

Ole Miss moved to a co-#3 with Mississippi State and essentially play a combination of the SEC top dogs remaining. It’s looking like this group will get thinned down to who survives the SEC.

Baylor snuck in the top 5 after pumping Texas this weekend. They still have #9 TCU, #11 Oklahoma and #17 Kansas State on the schedule. If they can hold on and win the Big 12 they’ll likely lock up a spot in the playoffs.

Notre Dame rounds out our top contenders that remain undefeated. The Irish come in at #6 this week but have a date at #1 Florida State October 18th that will very clearly determine their season. After that, they have only #20 Arizona State as a ranked opponent.

It’s obviously still early. Very early. Florida State, despite much chatter about having underperformed thus far this year, are sitting pretty with an undefeated record, a #1 ranking, and just the Irish remaining as a real contender on the schedule.

The SEC will simply have to sort itself out. With 6 teams in the top 14 and 3 teams in the top 4, the SEC is entering the meat of their schedule where serious contenders meet serious contenders to help clarify this hazy playoff picture. I’ll be grabbing some popcorn and some Anheuser-Busch products to watch that unfold.

Baylor looks good; if they can steal a win in Oklahoma November 8th they’ll look really good for representing the Big 12 in the inaugural playoffs.

Notre Dame also looks good, but their fate will be determined in 2 weeks at Florida State. The Irish’ schedule isn’t deep and tough enough to overcome a substantial loss, so they’ll need a hell of a showing to keep their playoff hopes alive.

This weekend put 1-loss teams back in the mix. As is tradition, losing early is way, way better than losing late. Now we watch, and we see, and we enjoy.
